Jardim da Glória

Description

The site of this project is located in the Bairro da Graça, in Lisbon, a central area of the city with strong historic value. The key element of this project is urban integration. To respect, enhance and renew this space.

This intervention seeks the revitalization of the interior courtyard of a block through an operation at an urban scale. This urban operation functions through adjacency and connectivity, with the rehabilitation of two existing buildings (Rua das Beatas nr 28 and nr 26), along with the extension of nr 16 of Rua das Beatas, two buildings located in the center of the courtyard, a single family house and a support building.

In a global and integrated logic, the urban rehabilitation and regeneration of the private and public outdoor spaces aim to achieve quality of space and life in the urban fabric and morphology of the neighborhood, through a new approach of contemporary character.

The proposed buildings for the center of the plot open the range of housing offer that characterizes the Graça neighborhood, defining a residential complex with a strong component of sustainability and environmental integration, and closely linked to the potential of the green character of the patio whose preservation and enhancement constitutes a structural axis of the project.

Their shapes propose a balance between built and empty space on various levels and especially on the top floors, which are intended to occupy garden terraces and balconies overlooking the garden. The project aims to attenuate the mass effect, in a way more characteristic of the historical city, with which the proposal intends to articulate and integrate.

Given the size of the site and the preservation of the permeable courtyard that is intended to be secured, the project is characterized and enhanced by the remarkable presence of its gardens.

The green spaces, conceived as a walking tour through diferente environments, are an invitation to connect with nature: areas of refuge for both fauna and residents, sharing spaces, areas for meditation.

This “biodiversity refuge” will be an important contribution to improving city-wide biodiversity, notably because of the overwhelming and exceptional importance of nature within one of Lisbon’s densest neighborhoods.
